Blue Crush

All right, Blue Crush is a surfing movie, not a diving movie. But love of the ocean and of spending time in it or on top of it is front and center throughout. Hence its inclusion here.

Blue Crush follows three surfer girls in Hawaii as they prepare for the biggest women's surf competition of the year. Along the way the star, played by Kate Bosworth, deals with a rebellious kid sister, an overly demanding friend, a bitchy boss and a romantic NFL quarterback patterned after Tom Brady. Oh, yeah, she's also developed a fear of surfing big waves.

The story may sound lame and it is pretty predictable. It's biggest problem is that throughout the movie, we're supposed to accept the fact that Bosworth's character is a great surfer without ever actually seeing her do anything great on a surf board.

But Blue Crush still has a lot going for it. There's a great soundtrack (our favorite is the remix of the old Bananarama song Cruel Summer), attractive people of both genders walking around in very little clothing, and Hawaii's roaring waves. If you have any feel for the ocean, you'll probably like this movie. We recommend it.
