Jaws of Death

Jaws of Death came out shortly after Jaws, so it's not hard to figure what it's about. But it does have a twist. The hero, Richard Jaeckel, best known for his role as the head guard in The Dirty Dozen, achieves some kind of spiritual connection to the sharks and then uses his home base in Key West, Florida to track down and punish, with extreme prejudice, anyone who messes with them.

At the same time, Jaeckel lends "his sharks" out to various institutions, such as a lab supposedly engaged in shark research, and a night club that wants sharks to swim around in a tank with its underwater dancers. Ah, okay.

Little by little, Jaeckel's character, who's already a mass murderer, is driven over the edge by a string of treacherous acts, one after the other, committed against the sharks by those he trusts. Like we said, the plot has a twist off the standard shark-as-the-devil-incarnate theme, but it's not enough to save it. And we won't even mention the production values. Throw in a mere eight minutes of substandard underwater footage and you've got a real stinker on your hands. Avoid it.

Jaws of Death is available on DVD, and also masquerades under the title Mako: Jaws of Death.
