Sharks' Treasure

Sharks' Treasure came out in the mid-1970s on the heels of Jaws, and was clearly marketed with an eye toward making a few bucks off the Jaws sensation. It was written, produced, directed and starred Cornel Wilde, a guy who had a tendency to overreach himself. Not surprisingly, it's a horrible movie.

The plot, such as it is, follows a group of divers who set off in search of treasure from a sunken galleon. Naturally they have to battle themselves and their own inner demons along the way. But when they're also forced to duke it out with a seafaring group of escaped convicts, all of whom exhibit some of the more extreme forms prison behavior, things go from bad to worse.

The 15 minutes or so of underwater footage is marred by a variety of factors. In one scene, we watch the treasure hunters methodically kill shark after shark, all the while exclaiming how vicious the brutes are. There are no special effects here, all of these sharks were actually killed. Once the sharks are out of the way, the underwater scenes are scored with a piece of elevator music straight out of muzak hell, and a lounge lizard song about treasure that would make Dean Martin cringe. Oy vey.

To the best of our knowledge, Sharks' Treasure is not available on DVD, and can only be found on old VHS tapes. Don't knock yourself out looking for it, though.
