Wet Gold

This picture completed a cinematic grand slam of terrible Brooke Shields movies made in the late 70s and early 80s. Starting with Blue Lagoon, she moved on to Endless Love, then to Sahara, and finally this clunker. Made for TV, Wet Gold pretty much sank her career for a decade or so.

As the movie's tag line tells us, "Gold lured them to the deep ... greed and jealousy led them to terror!" Shields stars as a waitress in the Florida Keys who dreams of better things for herself and her friends. Said friends include a rich boyfriend who longs for his father's approval, a dive shop owner who's going bankrupt, and a down-and-out alcoholic, played by Burgess Meredith, who's forever mumbling about sunken treasure.

The four band together on a luxury yacht and set off in search of the gold, all the while happily babbling about the things they'll each buy with their share. When they don't find the treasure, though, the boyfriend starts to crack up, the diver starts to lust after Shields and Meredith starts to fear that the others don't really believe him. And this is just after Day One!

Luckily, they find the treasure on Day Two, before they have a chance to kill each other from the stress. But, of course, the gold only compounds their woes. By Day Three, madness, jealousy and paranoia have all set in. You can pretty much guess what happens from there.

As bad as Wet Gold is, the dive scenes are actually pretty good. If you can manage to pay attention only while they're underwater, go for it. Otherwise, it's 90 minutes of your life you'll never get back. To the best of our knowledge, this movie is only available in used VHS.
